Medical abortion at 13 or more weeks gestation provided through telemedicine: A retrospective review of services
An analysis of the efficacy of self-administered medical abortion for pregnancies 13 weeks and later.
Women on Web analyzed medical abortions prescribed for pregnancies at 13 weeks or more between 2016 and 2019. The data included abortions with both Mifepristone and Misoprostol, and Misoprostol alone to evaluate their effectiveness.
The case study observed 144 women over 13 weeks, 90% of whom were given a combination of Mifepristone and Misoprostol, and 91% of whom provided Women on Web with outcome data. Variables such as demographics, pregnancy history, and continuing pregnancy/post-abortion treatment were factored into the analysis.
The research concluded the greater the gestational age, the lower the efficacy rate of self-administered medical abortions. While the data size was small, the research indicated self-managed abortions are safe between 13-15 weeks. More data analysis is needed beyond the 15 weeks gestational period.
