ABORTION PILLS ARE UNSTOPPABLE: Women on Web Impact and Activism in 2024
In 2024 Women on Web continued to work across six continents and supported abortion seekers in 171 countries.
For nearly 20 years, our team of activists, researchers and health workers has supported women and pregnant people to access abortion care on their own terms, regardless of restrictive laws.
2024 IN NUMBERS
🌍Our service received over 35,000 requests to access abortion pills by mail
💊 4390 of these requests came from people requesting abortion pills "just in case"
💬 Our help desk responded to almost 100,000 messages in 16 languages
📈 The service supported 30% more abortion seekers than in 2023
Request abortion pills for future use
"Without Women on Web, I would not have been able to have the abortion because of the restrictions in my country. I don't know what I would have done if I had been forced to keep the pregnancy. I am truly grateful to Women on Web." (the Philippines)
Since Women on Web was launched in 2005, global abortion access has taken great strides, and self-managed abortion has transformed the way we access and experience abortion.
Women on Web has gone through transformations of its own and redefined its work in response to the growing calls to demedicalize abortion care and challenge the power dynamics between doctors and patients.
Today, Women on Web is led by a non-medical team with a fresh set of priorities and principles - listening and acting in solidarity with each other, with our care seekers and with the global reproductive justice movement, working toward a world in which abortion is recognized as part of life and is freely available.
TRANSFORMATIONS THAT SHAPED US IN 2024
- Our medical team grew and we hired professionals from the Global Majority to represent diverse voices and expertise within our international service.
- Online consultation and service protocols were simplified, removing many medically unnecessary questions to make access to our service easier.
- We started updating 3000+ help desk scripts to center them around the needs, values, and culture of our care-seekers, offering every person practical information, quality referrals, and clinician support if desired or needed.
- A new compensation framework was introduced to provide our global team with the same pay for the same role, regardless of their location. Equity is our core value and we want to make sure that the way we are structured honors it.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2024
- Our abortion pill service opened in the US and saw a fourfold increase in requests right after the election. The US landscape for abortion is changing almost daily but our service will continue in all 50 states, regardless of restrictions and bans.
- More and more people are reaching out to us from the Philippines. In 2024, we received over 4,600 requests, and our help desk responded to almost 20,000 messages from Filippino care-seekers.
- Continued supporting Ukrainian refugees in Poland together with our partner Martynka that also provides safe shelter and access psychological support and legal counselling.
- In Germany, Women on Web raised awareness on self-managed abortion and participated in strategic spaces that organized around the decriminalization of abortion.
- We joined forces with other feminist organizations from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand to form the Miso Miso Alliance that aims to strengthen the abortion movement and voices across East and Southeast Asia
- Launched a new initiative in West Africa where Women on Web supports local providers and activists to build up their programs in a secure way to increase local access to self-managed abortions.
- Our campaign with Me Too Iran continued to direct people to our service and in 2024 we supported 400% more Iranian abortion seekers than in 2023.
DIGITAL CENSORSHIP AND ABORTION ACCESS
- The court case in South Korea was lost and our websites remain censored for the 5th year. The fight is far from over and our litigation efforts will continue in 2025.
- In Spain the legal win did not produce any meaningful change or justice outside the courtrooms and our website continues to be blocked. Stay tuned, we are not going to be silenced!
- Abortion-related content continues to be banned, restricted, and removed by Google, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. In collaboration with Repro Uncensored, we organized events, campaigns, meetings, and published research to hold Big Tech accountable and protect unrestricted access to accurate and unbiased abortion information.
❤️Thank you for your support this past year. Together, we’re breaking barriers, expanding access to abortion care, and ensuring everyone can make decisions about their bodies and futures.
📣Help us spread the word about abortion pills and take action to expand and reshape abortion access by supporting our work.
There will be challenges ahead in 2025 but Women on Web is ready to stand up against the laws and political systems that continue to outlaw abortion, cut access to abortion pills and intimidate abortion activists and providers.
Abortion is essential healthcare. Courts and politicians are not going to keep us from supporting each other.
✨Abortion pills are unstoppable✨
